O’Neal – invention follows ingenuity

The story of O’Neal is almost the story of motocross itself and it’s a story that would repeat itself less than two decades later for the sport of mountain biking.

Jim O’Neal grew up in the San Fernando Valley area of Los Angeles. As a young teenager in the early 1960’s, Jim became hooked on motorcycling. He lived for it. It was all he thought about. He rode on the dirt trails and hills with his buddies, but motocross bikes, as such, really didn’t exist yet. Instead, Jim and his friends rode street bikes they converted for the trails.

Later, during his freshman year in high school, Jim started riding a Triumph to school everyday. Triumph bikes were highly sought after because they tended to be better performers than other motorbikes in the same price range. “It was cool to have something no one else had,” Jim said. “I started making parts and modifying my motorcycle in metal shop at school. This is when I realized there was a huge demand for special parts that could modify street bikes to take the abuse of off-road racing.”

More and more, Jim attended off-road races to sell his selection of different customized parts and accessories he had made. By 1970, this little side venture had grown enough to become his full-time gig. That’s when he incorporated Jim O’Neal Distributing and officially, O’Neal as a brand was born.

Azonic Helmets is the mountain bike and BMX division of Jim O’Neal Distributing. Like O’Neal does with its motocross products, Azonic offers superbly engineered, incredibly strong components for mountain bikes and BMX bikes, the critical components at stress points where the bike takes its biggest beating – the bike frame, its wheels, pedals, bars, and stem. The same is true for Azonic helmets. Azonic full-face helmets are well engineered and very strong. An Azonic helmet provides excellent head protection in sports where superior head protection is an absolute necessity.
