Giro Tuneups Audio Drops: How do they work? Do they work?
In older models of Giro helmets, users had to remove the stock ear pads and insert new ones with speakers pre-installed inside the pads. The new Giro Tuneups Audio Drops are actual thin speakers that "drop" into the newly designed earpads that come with your Giro snow helmet. The TuneUps Audio Drops are designed to work with helmets manufactured by Giro after the 2009/2010 season. Lift the flap in the ear pad, pull out the small foam disc from the earpads, and place the speakers into the ear pads. Plug the Skullcandy-powered module into your phone or mp3 player and you're ready to listen to music. The sound quality is very good on the music player; you may have to turn it up (easily done via the dial on the Bluetooth module) to use the phone.
What’s the Difference Between the Giro TuneUps Audio Drops Standard System and Giro TuneUps Audio Drops with Bluetooth Link?
Giro gives you two options to bring your music to the slopes.
The Giro TuneUps Standard Audio Drops system allows you to play music using a wire plugged into an iPod or most mp3 players. Once the Giro TuneUps Audio Drops are inserted into your helmet earpads, you can just plug into your audio player and go. The standard package is like turning your helmet into a giant set of earbuds.
The Giro TuneUps Drops with Bluetooth Link requires a bit more set-up.
- Hands-Free (Wireless) Mode. If you want to interact with your cell phone in hands-free mode, you must synch your phone to the Bluetooth Link module (details on how to do this are included in the manual that comes with the Audio Drops).
- Manual Mode. If you don't mind pulling out your phone (i.e., NOT using hands-free mode), you can just plug the TuneUps into your phone and start making calls.
- In either mode, the Bluetooth Link automatically mutes your music during a call.
- IMPORTANT NOTE: The Giro TuneUps Audio Drops with Bluetooth Link is not designed to work with two devices at the same time - i.e. you can't hardwire the audio in an mp3 player AND ALSO use a separate phone at the same time. The TuneUps Bluetooth Link with Drops provides the most functionality when your music is stored on your phone (i.e., an iPhone or Android powered phone). With music on your phone, the benefits of music and phone controls are fully available to you.
- When using any helmet audio system, please remember to be responsible and considerate on the slopes, regardless of what song is playing.
Giro: Your Comprehensive Line of Giro Ski Helmets and Giro Snowboard Helmets
Since 1985, Giro has been at the vanguard of helmet design and protection. Giro helmet technology has improved steadily since the mid-1980s. Helmets for bicycling and ski racing used to be clunky things that were heavy and poor fitting because helmet construction technology lagged significantly behind the science of head protection. Thus the cyclist or skier who wanted head protection was limited to heavy motorcycle-like helmets with little or no vents.
Then in 1984 came a new protective standard, ASTM F2040, and an ingenious designer by the name of Jim Gentes who had a vision to design lightweight, well-vented yet highly protective headgear that could achieve this new ASTM F2040 standard. Gentes founded Giro Sport Design in 1985 and
introduced his first helmet to the market in 1986, an oversized, expanded polystyrene (EPS) bicycle helmet that came with interchangeable bright-colored Lycra cloth helmet covers. Because it had no hard shell, this new Giro helmet was incredibly lightweight. It was also extremely well vented. And with the interchangeable covers, Giro brought style into the mix. One day you could ride with a red Giro helmet, the next day you could wear a blue one. Brilliant.
Over the next two decades, Giro continued to advance its bike helmet designs. Giro was able to apply much of its experience in constructing bicycle helmets to manufacturing ski helmets and snowboard helmets. With more units sold than any other manufacturer, Giro is quite simply the leader in the development of protective gear for your head.
