Heelys continue to be popular with kids, and you may have read recent articles about injuries to kids wearing Heelys. Our recommendations for wearing protective gear for Heelys is this:
- When first learning how to heel, wear safety gear. This includes a skateboard helmet, a pair of wrist guards, and skateboard knee pads and elbow pads
- Once proficient with heeling, then you can relax on the safety gear requirements
- If you're trying to learn new tricks, including grinding, jumping, or faster speeds, then put the safety gear back on!
From our perspective, wearing Heelys is similar in risk to rollerblading / inline skating. Ideally, we'd recommend wearing at least a helmet and wrist guards at all times. But, we also recognize that you can't wear a helmet and wrist guards on the school bus or in class.
We think the above recommendations are a reasonable balance of safety while the risk is high, versus the reality of wearing Heelys on a daily basis.
