What Protective Gear is Right for Heelys?

Heelys continue to be popular with kids, and you may have read recent articles about injuries to kids wearing Heelys. Our recommendations for wearing protective gear for Heelys is this:
  • When first learning how to heel, wear safety gear. This includes a skateboard helmet, a pair of wrist guards, and skateboard knee pads and elbow pads
  • Once proficient with heeling, then you can relax on the safety gear requirements
  • If you're trying to learn new tricks, including grinding, jumping, or faster speeds, then put the safety gear back on!
From our perspective, wearing Heelys is similar in risk to rollerblading / inline skating. Ideally, we'd recommend wearing at least a helmet and wrist guards at all times. But, we also recognize that you can't wear a helmet and wrist guards on the school bus or in class.

We think the above recommendations are a reasonable balance of safety while the risk is high, versus the reality of wearing Heelys on a daily basis.
