McDavid HexPad Freeride Padded Ski Pants and Snowboard Pants: What's a HexPad Anyway?
McDavid's patented HexPad technology has been used by a majority of Division 1 football teams for several years. In 2010, the company began offering HexPad technology in ski protective wear and snowboard protective wear. As the name implies, HexPad material is made up of a grid-like pattern of hexagonally shaped pads that are permanently bonded to the fabric of compression garments. Each individual hexagon pad is less than an inch across and can move individually or along with the other pads. This configuration allows the McDavid Freeride padded pants truly to conform to the shape of your unique body. The tiny HexPads squish and expand upon impact, working as a unit to absorb the force of impact. McDavid has also designed the Freeride padded ski pants and padded snowboard pants to have heavier impact protection for areas likely to endure harder/more frequent hits (i.e., tailbone and knees) and lighter impact protection for areas less likely to take a hard hit. The result is a lightweight, breathable layer of protection that conforms to and moves with your body.
McDavid: Making Protective Gear for 40 Years
McDavid traces its roots back to 1969 when Dr. Robert F. McDavid designed and developed what was to become the first widely used lateral protective knee brace in football. Based in Woodridge, Illinois, McDavid manufactures and markets over 400 different innovative products for athletes and active people of all ages. McDavid is the most widely used and recommended brand of braces among sports medical professionals and the industry leader in sports medical products, technical performance athletic wear, and consumer merchandising. McDavid introduced compression shorts and supporters in 1992. These products use the company’s HydraVent hDc™ fabric, which manages perspiration by increasing evaporation rates, making the garments cooler and drier for greater comfort and better performance. Its most recent innovation, HexPad™ Technology, fuses padding to performance fabrics. The company’s goal is to develop innovative products and technologies to help prevent injury and to enhance performance of athletes and active people of all ages. McDavid estimates that more than 90% of professional basketball teams, 50% of professional football teams, and almost all collegiate teams wear McDavid products every time they practice or play a game. McDavid has broadened its reach to other sports, including soccer, lacrosse, skiing, snowboarding, bmx, motorcross, and mountain biking.
