Protect yourself! Rock vs head...rock wins

Mountain biking is challenging enough. Rocks, tree roots, ditches, branches, your riding buddies - they can all cause an accident or hurt you. We believe a mountain bike helmet is not optional, so choose one from these basic types: full-face mountain bike helmets or "all mountain" bike helmets, or the two others also shown below. Which type you need depends on the type of riding you do. Read more about mountain biking helmets and which one is best for you...

What kind of mountain bike helmet do I need?

Mountain bike helmets come in one of two general styles: full-face mountain bike and open-face mountain bike. As with any sport, the type of helmet you need depends on what you’re going to be doing. If you prefer cross country, single track and recreational riding, an open-face mountain bike helmet offers excellent lightweight, comfortable, and well-ventilated protection. If you enjoy downhill riding, dirt jumping, and other high speed, higher-risk forms of riding, consider the additional protection of a full-face mountain bike helmet. Make sure your mountain bike helmet fits properly. A helmet that is too loose or too tight can do more harm than good.
  • Measure your head and then select the helmet that is ideally sized for you
  • Consider a mountain bike helmet with an adjustable fit system, so you can tailor the fit of your helmet
  • Choose an mtb helmet with adjustable straps and a secure buckle
Once you’ve chosen a mountain biking helmet, it’s a good idea to inspect your helmet periodically to make sure it’s in good shape. Even if the helmet hasn’t sustained a major hard impact, temperature extremes or exposure to common chemicals such as those found in sunscreen can damage your helmet. Learn how to inspect your mountain bike helmet and more about what factors can shorten the lifespan of mountain bike helmets in our Helmet Learning Center.
