POC Cortex Flow: Isn't a heavier helmet more uncomfortable?
The POC Cortex Flow helmet uses a fiberglass shell, which is slightly heavier than the traditional carbon fiber shell but also more durable. Combining the fiberglass shell with a multi-impact expanded polypropylene (EPP) interior liner means that the POC Cortex Flow can withstand numerous low-impact hits without having to be replaced, as would a mountain bike helmet with an expanded polystyrene (EPS) liner. In addition, all of the POC Cortex Flow's components have been designed with equal parts safety and function in mind. The chin/mouth guard has been sized and spaced to provide easy breathing without sacrificing protection. Two generous but well-protected ear vents and a steel mesh mouth vent allow you to hear and be heard trailside. The POC Cortex Flow is cut wide enough to give you great peripheral vision. An ultra-flexible, adjustable angle visor offers extra facial protection. (And the visor is attached by machined aluminum thumbscrews--no worries about it falling off.) The POC Cortex Flow also features a total of 11 vents, allowing more air to flow through the helmet and increasing your comfort. So to answer the question: No, a heavier shell doesn't necessarily make for an uncomfortable helmet. In the case of the Cortex Flow helmet, it makes for a more durable, well-ventilated, fullface mountain bike helmet. As with any helmet, be sure to inspect the interior and exterior for cracks or other damage after any serious impact. If you take a hit hard enough to make you say, "Wow!" please check your helmet.
