What makes the POC Skull Comp Ski Helmet 2.0 special?

Ski racing helmets are likely to be exposed to repeated blows from hitting gates at high speed. This is a problem because most traditional ski helmets aren't designed to withstand multiple impacts. Sports enthusiasts have traditionally had two choices in helmet design: hardshell or in-mold. Traditional hardshell helmets tend to be heavy (think motorcycle helmets). In-mold helmets have a thinner hardshell on the outside fused with a foam core of expanded polystyrene (EPS). They are very lightweight and act like a traditional hardshell helmet up to a point. When the force of impact becomes too great, the in-mold helmet’s thinner hardshell exterior is designed to break. Then the EPS inner core takes over to disperse the remaining force over the entire helmet. The end result is a protected head but a damaged helmet.

With the POC Skull Comp 2.0 ski helmet, POC has effectively married heavier, hardshell motorcycle helmet technology with lighter weight in-mold bicycle helmet technology. The Skull Comp 2.0 incorporates a thin layer of military-grade Aramid (what it calls an "anti-penetration barrier" or APB) in between a thin (.9 mm) exterior polycarbonate (PC/ABS) hardshell and an expanded polypropylene (EPP) foam core. The APB helps preserve the structural integrity of the shell while still cushioning your head. Most importantly, the multi-impact EPP does not deform permanently upon impact and is designed to withstand repeated shocks. The POC Skull Comp 2.0 helmet meets FIS requirements for world cup downhill competition that specify that the G's recorded on a drop cannot exceed 230 (versus the 250 standard). As with any helmet, be sure to inspect the interior and exterior for cracks or other damage after any serious impact. If you take a hit hard enough to make you say, "Wow!" please check your helmet.

POC of Sweden: Gorgeous Design, Superior Protection

We can’t think of enough superlatives to describe the new line of ski helmets and snowboard helmets from POC of Sweden. POC combines sophisticated engineering with spare Scandinavian styling to produce what are arguably some of the best-looking, high-tech protective gear on the planet. The company has won numerous international design awards. In terms of safety, one award in particular stands out. Volvo, possibly the most safety-conscious company in the world, awarded POC its Grand Prize in the category of Active Safety as part of their prestigious annual Volvo ISPO Sports Design Award competition. In addition, POC now has a partnership with Polygiene AB to include Polygiene odor control wipes in POC ski helmets, bike helmets, and body armor.
