POC Skull X Helmet--Why "Semi-hardshell"?
A traditional hardshell helmet is designed to protect you from objects that might otherwise, upon impact, puncture or crack your skull. However, traditional hardshell helmets tend to be heavy and do not always do the best job at protecting what’s inside that skull of yours - your very intelligent gray matter that we’re sure you’d like to keep healthy and robust for a long time to come.
Enter ‘in-mold’ helmet technology, which employs a thinner hardshell as its outer shield. An in-mold helmet is very lightweight and acts exactly like a traditional hardshell helmet up to a point. Once this point is reached (when the force of impact becomes too great), the in-mold helmet’s thinner hardshell exterior is purposely designed to break. Then the more absorbing, inner core of expanded polystrene foam (EPP) takes over to disperse the remaining force over the entire spherical structure of EPP that covers your head. This absorption and spread of force reduces cerebral contusion, internal bleeding, and whiplash, all things that can cause brain damage.
POC has effectively married heavier, puncture-resistant hardshell motorcycle helmet technology with lighter weight in-mold bicycle helmet technology. POC accomplishes this feat by incorporating between the thinner hardshell and the in-mold EPP cushion a military-grade Aramid ballistic penetration barrier (APB). The result is a ski and snowboard helmet that is incredibly lightweight, durable, and protective.
