POC Synapsis Ski Helmet--Bicycle helmet technology with a ballistic shield
"In-mold" helmet technology revolutionized the sport of cycling. With the POC Synapsis helmet, it can do the same for ski helmets and snowboarding helmets. The benefit of in-mold technology has always been that it allows a helmet to be highly protective yet extremely lightweight. The drawback of in-mold technology is that it typically makes a helmet "single impact," i.e., in-mold helmets are purposely designed to break in order to disperse the force of impact over the entire inner foam core. This means that your typical in-mold helmet is only effective for one big impact. After that, you have to throw it away and buy a new helmet. With the Synapsis, POC has sandwich-fused a layer of military-grade Aramid (what it calls an "anti-penetration barrier" or APB) in between a 1 mm polycarbonate hardshell and a one-inch thick inner expanded polystyrene (EPS) foam core. This adds significantly more strength to the Synapsis hardshell, so it won’t be compromised nearly as easily. Yet because the Synapsis has such a thin hardshell, the force of impact can still be spread throughout the inner foam core. The result is an ultra lightweight ski helmet that still meets ASTM F2040 and CE-1077 safety standards. As with any helmet, be sure to inspect the interior and exterior for cracks or other damage after any serious impact. If you take a hit hard enough to make you say, "Wow!" please check your helmet.
POC of Sweden: Gorgeous Design, Superior Protection
We can’t think of enough superlatives to describe the new line of ski helmets and snowboard helmets from POC of Sweden. POC combines sophisticated engineering with spare Scandinavian styling to produce what are arguably some of the best-looking, high-tech protective gear on the planet.
The company has won numerous international design awards. In terms of safety, one award in particular stands out. Volvo, possibly the most safety-conscious company in the world, awarded POC its Grand Prize in the category of Active Safety as part of their prestigious annual Volvo ISPO Sports Design Award competition. POC now has a partnership with Polygiene AB to include Polygiene odor control wipes in POC ski helmets, bike helmets, and body armor.
