Do you need skateboard hip pads?

Many riders like to wear padded skateboard shorts (also called “skateboard hip pads”) under their regular shorts or jeans to protect against bruises and other injuries when they fall. These skateboard shorts with built in use foam pads with thicknesses ranging from a quarter-inch to a half-inch. Thicker pads will obviously provide more impact absorption and protection but also more bulk. Some skateboard hip pads use a combination of soft foam and hard plastic (typically over the tailbone); choose a combination if you need puncture protection. Each manufacturer will design skateboard padded shorts a little differently, but pad coverage is most important for the hips, tailbone, upper thigh, sit bones, and hip pointers.
