For more than 30 years, motocross racers have chosen UFO body armor to protect them on all types of terrain, both in and out of competition. In a classic story typical of the great entrepreneurs of our day, a man named Vito Consoloni, once another company’s energetic employee, decided to launch out on his own, to build a better mousetrap, to manufacture protective gear for motocross riders that would be lighter and more protective than other options available at that time.

Setting up shop in his garage in a Calcinaia, a small village 20 kilometers east of Pisa, he and two others incorporated UFO Plast and began developing what would become a full line of motocross protective body armor and helmets. Very soon thereafter, riders wearing UFO protective gear in enduro and cross-country events began winning national and even world championships. The popularity of UFO Plast protective gear among motocross athletes spread like a brush fire in a Santa Ana wind.

Enter the 1980’s and the emergence of a new sport called mountain biking. Mountain biking was invented in the late 1970’s by a group of latter-day hippies who had customized their old Schwinn cruiser bicycles to thrill-ride down the fireroads of Mount Tamalpais, north of San Francisco. By the early 1980’s, a new kind of bike began to appear in bike shops purpose-built for this kind of trail riding. At first, the large bicycle manufacturers dismissed the concept as a passing fad. However, by the end of that decade, sales of road bikes had stagnated; sales of mountain bikes were going through the roof.

A one Vito Consoloni took notice and chose not to sit out on the sidelines. From its base in motocross, UFO Plast was perfectly positioned to launch a new line of mountain bike protective gear. Today, the UFO MTB line includes more than 25 different articles of protective mountain bike gear for the entire body – head, torso, and limbs.

Skiing as an organized sport has existed in the North America since the late 1940’s. However, use of protective ski gear was practically unheard of, save for the highest levels of ski racing, until the early 1990’s. And when this protective gear trend began, once again, Consoloni was there.
